Dance for Dollars a Tabatha’s Salon Takeover Nightmare

Submitted by Daedrian McNaughton on – No Comment

What would you do, if Tabatha Coffey host of Bravo series, “Tabatha’s Salon Takeover” showed up in your salon, demanded your keys, and a total take over of your staff and struggling business for a week? The smartest thing would be to hand over the bloody keys, because it will only get better.

If you are a struggling salon owner, hand over the keys and take lessons from the pro. Tabatha Coffey, Bravo’s no-nonsense stylist and salon owner, knows a thing or two when it comes to running a successful and upscale salon. She has devoted her life to advance education in hair design with an extensive background and experience in the field.

As an experienced stylist and salon owner, Tabatha took it upon herself to help struggling stylists and salon owners brush up on their hair design and business skills.

This season, no task is too big for Tabatha. Whether it’s moving into a salon owner’s house for the night to stage a family intervention, tackling five slacking owners in one salon, turning around a downtrodden children’s salon with stylists who don’t like kids or even doing hair, renovating a gay salon with questionable taste, or trekking a salon’s staff to the middle of the Mohave Desert to learn to survive as a team – Tabatha gives these struggling salons the major push they need to get back on track.

But a successful salon takeover is never without surprises, oppositions and a few twists. In a conversation with Tabatha, she talked about her craziest salon takeover where clients were encouraged to dance for dollars, and offered some advice to first time salon owners.

Daedrian McNaughton: In the upcoming season what was your craziest moment? Or who was the craziest salon owner you had to deal with?

Tabatha Coffey: They’re all a little crazy in their own way but I think my craziest salon this season was definitely when we went to Provincetown. It had a lot of challenges and I have never in my life seen a stripper pole in the middle of a salon. So that was definitely my – my crazy moment of Season 3 was walking into a salon that was 450 square feet so it was incredibly small. And smack in the middle was a stripper pole where client were encouraged to dance for dollars that they would get. For every minute they spent on the pole they’d get a dollar off their haircut.

Daedrian McNaughton: They did? Was it working?

Tabatha Coffey: Some clients – it didn’t work as well as the owner anticipated strangely enough. No. I actually saw clients fleeing out of the salon when they were offered to get on the stripper pole and dance to get money off their product sales or their haircuts. So it wasn’t a great marketing tactic at all.

Daedrian McNaughton: I just have a follow up question. As an experienced stylist, what is the most important piece of advice you could – you would give to someone or a stylist who is opening a salon for the very first time?

Tabatha Coffey: I think if a stylist is opening a business for the first time it’s really preparation. Sometimes – I think anyone who opens a business thinks I’m great at what I do and that’s enough to carry me through. But it’s really making sure that you have a great, solid business plan, that you have your finances in place, that you have a company statement, that you’ve thought about the location, you’ve thought about the demographic of your clients. So that’s my biggest key advice to anyone that opens a business. It’s great to have a great skill and a passion for what you do but you need to make sure that you’ve really laid it out on paper and have a true vision of what you want your business to be and what you want it to become so that you can sustain yourself all the way through.

Coffey has a new memoir coming out from Harper Collins titled “It’s Not Really About the Hair: The Honest Truth About Life, Love, and the Business of Beauty.”
